Katie Chmielewski is the Communications & Partnerships Associate at Safe Passage Project, a nonprofit providing free legal representation to immigrant youth in New York. In this role, she helps to coordinate the organization’s volunteer attorney program, leads the organization’s communications, and supports special projects. Katie’s first involvement in immigration work was as an Americorps volunteer working with immigrant families in transitional housing in Washington, D.C. In this role, she led an after school program and food pantry, and provided comprehensive case management to families. Before joining the Safe Passage Project team, Katie worked at the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce, where she advocated for LGBTQ business owners’ equal access to contracting opportunities. Previously, she worked on the League of Women Voters’ communications team, where she managed social media platforms, created communications toolkits, and developed a #GetOutTheVote campaign leading up to the 2016 presidential election. Katie holds a BA in history and French language with minors in women’s studies and global studies from Marist College.
