Abril Gallardo Cervera is Communications Director of Living United for Change in Arizona and Arizona Center for Empowerment, two grassroots community organizations whose mission is to fight for social and economic justice for immigrants in Arizona. Most recently, Abril was Communications Coordinator with the Bazta Arpaio Campaign, which unseated the infamous Sheriff Arpaio. Abril formerly served as the Coordinator of the One Arizona Implementation Working Group, composed of eight of the strongest pro-immigrant organizations in Arizona, which focused on educating, mobilizing, and demanding dignity for immigrant families. Abril’s family and faith kept her grounded and strong as she grew up undocumented in a notoriously anti-immigrant state. The signing of SB1070 brought more fear for Abril and her family. Nevertheless, Abril was able to transform this sense of fear into a force to get involved and organize the immigrant community in Arizona. For the past seven years her organizing efforts have transformed the lives of thousands of Arizonans through federal, state, and local policy change.
